The weld type coupling is used to join rigid rods by welding.  They are slotted on the ends to allow for increased effective weld area, which translates into higher torsional strength.  The pin type coupling is similar to the weld type, but is joined with the use of pins, providing an easily disassembled joint for ease of maintenance.
